Yesterday Christopher and Maire opened up their home and let some magic in.
Steven Walters, who should get someone to update his web presence, gave an intimate house concert.
The whole Saturday I was very busy and I wanted to finish something, so I was late and I sneaked into the back of the room, the one that Steven was already filling with his voice and excellent guitar playing.
I sat there after all this running around and Stevens singing calmed me down almost instantly. He reminds me of James Taylor with a lot of spirituality thrown in there.
Ten years ago he was diagnosed with Leukemia and was lucky to survive, because he found in his brother an ideal bone marrow donner.
After that experience one has a different outlook on life and you can hear it in his songs and the stories he tells. They reach out and touch you deep inside.
One childhood story I particular liked. He was at the Jersey Shores for the first time in his life and wanted to play with the other kids behind the big breakers, but the first couple of times he tried to get there he got beaten badly by the waves, swallowed water and took it on the chin.
Then he saw this other little kid and the big wave was coming, but the boy was actually looking forward to and dove right into it, and he saw him coming out on the back of the wave with a big smile on his face.
He tried and it worked for him too. That was the lesson of the day: To dive right in. Of course he sang a song about it. Very moving.
It is getting warmer and I should have a house concert like this one on my little back porch.
